Welcome back to Takeover Tuesday, where each week, Billboard taps chart-topping artists and tastemakers to compile their very own playlist exclusive to Billboard's Spotify account. We give the artists free rein to base the list on whatever subject they choose. The only rule? Make it as creative and unique to them as possible.
Zha Ward now has some summer bops her own, as the 18-year-old just released a beat-heavy EP, 17, on June 14. The six-song set is Ward's debut project on Columbia Records, with which she signed in May 2018 after becoming a fan favorite on the singing reality series The Four.
But before Zha rose to fame, she was spending her summers blasting hits from superstars like Drake and Lauryn Hill. And even though she's an artist herself now, Zha is still jamming to those classics — and subsequently turned them into a Takeover Tuesday playlist for her "Real 1z."
"This is a playlist for the summer featuring classic bops real ones will know," Zha tells Billboard in a statement. "Just some fun songs to throw on and vibe to."
The 12-song playlist features tunes both old and new, from Lauryn Hill's brassy 1998 smash "Doo Wap (That Thing)" to Sam Smith and Normani's sultry collab "Dancing With a Stranger." Zha's picks prove she loves old school tracks, whether it's classics like Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice" and Snoop's Dr. Dre team-up "Still D.R.E." or not-so-familiar singles like Teena Marie's "Square Biz" from 1980 and Tom Browne's "Funkin for Jamaica" from 1981. Her playlist also shows she's a serious Drake stan, as she included "Madiba Riddim," a deep cut from his 2017 LP More Life.
Closing out the warm weather vibes is Mariah Carey's iconic holiday hit "All I Want For Christmas Is You" to, as Zha puts it, "ease into the holidays nice and early."
